Urban Amazon
Corporate Headquarters as Catalyst Of City Life
This project proposes a new Amazon Headquarter in East Boston/Revere, which not only meets the requirement for Amazon but also paybacks to local neighborhoods.
Most Corporate Headquarters develops condenses at the center of the site, surrounding by oceanic parking lots. They are isolated islands with no contact with the local context. In this proposal, thickened edges with different active public programs— active commerce, wetland park, recreational fields, and waterfront park— serve as buffer zones between Headquarters and neighborhoods.
The concentrated buildings will be redistributed into a moderate block scale. The active edges are connected by linear parks in the middle of four main boulevards, which also divide amazon core into small parcels.
At block scale, several typical amazon clusters are created, each has all the necessary programs with a parking garage, with a private courtyard at the center.
Corporate Headquarters usually damages the local commerce. To solve this problem and make the headquarter more permeable. We inserted local commercial developments into the Amazon blocks. An interactive public space is created between Amazon headquarter cluster and local commerce, where Amazon employees could walk out of the private courtyard at the break, eat or relax in this flexible open space. There are also smaller public spaces as the residue of Amazon courtyards. Together with the in-between spaces connecting to the public corridor and structure a public space system, which further enhanced this in-between space in serving the surrounding neighborhood.
With all the benefits to public life and local commerce, this corporate headquarter will be a generator of local urbanization and a catalyst for city life.
